Sometimes we get emails that are so good we just can’t keep them to ourselves. This email from Jonny in Leeds is one of those. We post it here with his kind permission.
Dear all at the Office of Letters and Light,
In 2009, prompted by a customer at Borders in Leeds, UK, where I worked at the time, I signed up to NaNoWriMo.org for the first time. Not four days into my time looking around the forums, gathering ideas for my first novel and checking out other people’s synopses, I received some NaNoMail from a Bay Area, CA resident named Kristina Casto who was looking for overseas writing buddies and a chance to share her previous three years’ NaNo experience. We got talking on MSN messenger and shortly after on Skype, and soon realised we had much more in common than we thought. By the time NaNoWriMo 2009 was over, Kristina already had plans to visit me in the UK, and we knew we were looking at something special. (Incidentally, I still want to finish my novel from that year, which involved a religion based around the music of David Bowie. It’ll happen one of these days.)
These are two of my Brighton Wrimos! I met them for the first time last Wednesday, and they are truly fantastic, interesting people. Kristina is also joining the Brighton Rockers next lot of fresh meat, so I look forward to hitting her lots. Y’know, with derby love.
Next November there will potentially be FIVE Rockers doing the NaNo crazy dance with me! (Three are joining fresh meat, and I think I’ve converted one of the Bruisers. SCORE!)
This ramble has been bought to you by: too much pizza, not enough sleep, very few words written, and two hours of roller derby. AKA, my life. Sorry.Tags: brighton, by chris baty, letters and light around the world, love, NaNoWriMo, noveling nuptials, november, roller derby, writers, writing
It was truly amazing. I love the Brighton Rockers so much – we beat the Romsey Town Rollerbillies by NINE POINTS. So the Rockers are still undefeated! And I played! And Bash kept putting me on when it got difficult, so I am so very very happy.
At one point three of the Romsey blockers hit me at once. I was told this at the afterparty, because I didn’t even notice it had happened and hardly moved at all. I am pleased. I fell over twice – once in each half. And I didn’t get a single penalty – not even a minor!
And my mum just bought me pizza in bed. Best day ever.Tags: bout, brighton, brighton rockers, first, heart, love, roller derby, roller girls, rollerbillies, romsey, roster, yay

I can’t stop laughing
I love MTL SO MUCH. I ended up cheering for the New Skids at Anarchy in the UK more than I did for London Brawling…
“Derby is Life” (by OutdoorVariety)
and boom goes the dynamite.
No one believes me when I say I met that guy. One of the guys on (and later coach of) my high school bowling team had a dorm room a few doors down at Ball State back when this happened.
OMG I want random referees to point at me whenever I do something good.
So, my life divides neatly into two areas these days: The Brighton Book Festival (my job) versus Roller Derby (my hobby), which means that from now on my tumblr is going to be part of increasing the amount of derby awesomeness on tumblr (something that is severely lacking. For shame, tumblr).
From now on, Vandulocity = All Derby, All The Time.
Enjoy 🙂Tags: book festival, hobby, life, love, roller derby, work
Glee Meme Day 20 → A hobby of yours
I’m not sure what my hobbies are at the moment. Sleeping? Does sleeping count? I do a lot of sleeping these days?
Oh! Right! The dancing thing. I guess that counts. I dance. Jive mostly these days, but in the past ballet (for, like, thirteen years. Um. Yeah. All I got from that was two sprained ankles, a lot of flexibility, and the ability to spin around without falling on my ass. Most of the time), hip-hop, tap, jazz, salsa, tango, ballroom, swing, modern, expressive… You name it, I can probably still dance at least a step or two.
This is less useful in life than one might think, although I did do jazz hands twice in my last interview, and I got the job, so take from that what you will.
PS Photo not mine, nor am I in it. Click it to go to the photographer’s flickr! Must get my twirling skirt out…Tags: <3, ballet, ballroom, dance, day 20, glee, jazz, jive, love, meme, photo, salsa, spin, swing, tango, twirl
Glee Meme Day 19 → A talent of yours
Glee Meme Day 16 → A song that makes you cry (or nearly)
Okay, since this meme is about GLEE, as in HAPPINESS, I choose a piece of music that always, without fail, makes me well up. Actually, I choose two. Both are horrendously uncool, but I was uncool before it was cool to be uncool, so here goes.
I choose To Build Jerusalem in secondplace, which is double uncool since I am somewhat of a complete athiest, and am pretty much anti-all-organised-religion, but it would appear that all those years of church schools, and the years of going to church in order to GET IN TO the church schools, have taken their toll.
The winner, I have to say, I am not ashamed of in the slightest, because is is be-fucking-autiful, and it is the song I’ve added here, and it’s the Cantique de Jean Racine composed by Gabriele Fauré.
I have a tendency to play it while I’m driving in much the same manner that certain groups of people my age will play rap, R’n’B, or bad rap-metal, that is to say, so loud that I occasionally fear it will shake the car apart.Tags: <3, cantique de jean racine, classical, cry, day 16, emotional, gabriele faure, glee, heart, love, meme, music, song
Glee Meme Day 15 → A fanfic
Oooh dear. I have only ever really been “in” two fandoms, although I read fanfic for several more. Those two being Harry Potter (for, like, ten years. Yeah. Shut up. It was fun, and got me drunk A LOT with awesome people), and more recently The Demon’s Lexicon.
Fanfics from the TDL fandom mean more to me because I’ve been there FROM THE START and these people are my friends… particularly my favourites are the utterly crack-tastic “Chris Pine” by Pyro (for which I, and twelve hours in a chat room, am entirely to blame), or “Prelude to a Monologue on an Assyrian Obelisk” by Novembersmith, because Nick makes a smilie face with knives among other excellent things.
Of course, there’s always the fic that I stumbled upon eight years ago which has evenutually lead me to the TDL fandom, and that is Sarah’s two fics: “Draco Malfoy, the Amazing Bouncing… Rat?” and of course “Underwater Light”.
Or do I choose the fic that, even before Sarah’s, lead me to slash fic? Obviously, I mean Rhysenn’s “Irresistible Poison”. Which I haven’t read since I was thirteen, but I can still remember. Reading that fic in the IT room at school got me a) kicked out twice and b) a boyfriend. Yeah. You read that right.
I think, though, that the winner has to be Cassandra Claire’s “Draco Trilogy” because it still breaks my heart with love every time I read it. AND NOW SHE DOES IT TO ME IN HER OWN BOOKS, THE TRICKY WENCH.
I call wench with love.Tags: cassandra claire, day 15, fandom, fanfic, fanfiction, glee, harry potter, love, meme, the demon's lexicon, wench
Glee Meme Day 13 → A fictional book
I am going to assume that this means a “fiction” book rather than a “fictional” book, because that would just be perplexing.
Anyway, I am currently innundated with books. I’m halfway through Melissa Marr’s Ink Exchange, the second in the Tattoo Faries series BUT I also just bought Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl, and Ash by Malinda Lo in a fit of fiscal recklessness because they were on sale and I am a sale slut.
However, I am going to ignore those and pick Ally Carter’s AWESOME Heist Society for today. Because it is awesome and I really cannot be more coherent about it. Sorry.
Also, how many awesome books are coming out this year? The next Queen’s Thief, White Cat, John Green & David Levithan’s co-written book, The Demon’s Covenant, the Unicorns vs Zombies anthology, The Dead-Tossed Waves (omg, so looking forward to that one), Mockingjay, Ascendant, AND THE FIRST CLOCKWORK ANGELS BOOK.
There are going to be a lot of tough descisions over food vs books this year. Oh dear.Tags: <3, 2010, booklust, books, day 13, glee, list, love, meme, nerd, releases
My favourite song is “Piazza, New York Catcher” by Belle & Sebastian, because many years ago a friend of mine who now lives in Egypt listened to it, and it reminded him of me, and he wrote me a beautiful letter with a story and a poem and lots of random musings about philosopy and love and then filled it with confetti and sent it to me on my 16th birthday.
I still have the letter and some of the confetti in its envelope, I never take it out, but just knowing where it is makes me smile.
Apparently it was on the Juno soundtrack and now everyone on youtube seems to have done a cover of it, but I turned 16 in 2004 so it’s my song 🙂Tags: belle & sebastian, day one, friendship, glee, love, meme, music, piazza new york catcher, song
