Every season inspires a new round of discussions about the issue of body diversity in the fashion industry: eating disorders, underage models, and the implicit racism of the many all-white runway shows. But aside from body diversity, the other main characteristic of runway models is their complete lack of expression. Aside from a handful of exceptions, models are largely encouraged to give an appearance of complete, vacant blankness when walking the runway, and Rick Owens’ non-professional models rebelled against this as well.
From the perspective of a designer trying to get people to pay attention to their work, it makes sense to hire models who look as blandly similar (and therefore easy to ignore) as possible. This show didn’t just ignore fashion industry expectations regarding race and body type, it broke all the rules of runway modeling. [READ MORE]
What would have once sounded like a far-fetched feminist fantasy – women forming the majority of a parliament – is a reality in one country in the world, Rwanda.
In fact, women are making gains throughout all of Africa, but these achievements have been met with a loud silence from the western feminist movement.

I wish I could illegally download clothes
This speaks to me on such a level that I feel almost embarrassed.
There’s a good chance that if 3d printing tech continues to advance, we will be able to do this in a generation or two. I don’t even want to illegally download clothes. I just don’t want to have to leave the house to get them…
there is no way I wasn’t gonna reblog this
Careful, those lower chocolates may make your stomach
The new Harry Potter is gonna be set in the 1920’s and so was the Great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby saw a green light across the lake I’m not saying death eaters but death eaters

I HAVE NEVER REBLOGGED SOMETHING SO FAST IN MY LIFE
OH MY GOD
I have a quick little experiment. If you believe that trans* women and cis women are both women (you can have any genitals and still be a woman), then please reblog!
If you disagree, please reblog this one here.
my jaw literally dropped. this is gorgeous.
This is relevant to my interests.
I need this to wear on my first day of college, because it is basically my mantra for the next year.
It doesn’t mean we should send them back for seconds.
Women are afraid of meeting a serial killer. Men are afraid of meeting someone fat.
When Strangers Click, a 2011 documentary about online dating.
It reminds me of that famous Margaret Atwood quote: “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.” It also reminds me of something written by one of the mods of Sex Worker Problems: “Misandry irritates. Misogyny kills.”
I mean, it’s just true.
“Misandry irritates. Misogyny kills.”
That’s it. That’s it right there.
I signed on to do [Thor] before there was a script. And Ken, who’s amazing, who is so incredible, was like, ‘You can really help create this character’. I got to read all of these biographies of female scientists like Rosalind Franklin who actually discovered the DNA double helix but didn’t get the credit for it. The struggles they had and the way that they thought – I was like, ‘What a great opportunity, in a very big movie that is going to be seen by a lot of people, to have a woman as a scientist’. She’s a very serious scientist. Because in the comic she’s a nurse and now they made her an astrophysicist. Really, I know it sounds silly, but it is those little things that makes girls think it’s possible. It doesn’t give them a [role] model of ‘Oh, I just have to dress cute in movies’
Fuck slut shaming.
It’s not slut shaming, it’s called self respect. You just don’t show your breasts all the time, they’re privates. Shut the fuck up.
why should anyone’s nipples be such a big deal though? it’s a bit weird to say that it’s okay for men to be shirtless and not women… I respect myself quite a bit and sometimes I’ve posed topless. it doesn’t make me a bad person and if someone loses respect over me showing a body part that literally everyone has, they’re regressive.
The reason breasts are considered “privates” is because misogynist culture oversexualizes the female breast despite it not being a sexual organ. The fact the males can go around shirtless in most public places (even if they are large enough to have breast-like pecs themselves) and females can’t is sexism, end of story.
Self respect isn’t about rather or not you show your breasts, it’s about being comfortable with your choices. If you want to pose topless, that’s okay. If you don’t, that’s okay too. What’s not okay is doing what the girls in the top picture are doing and saying you’re better than someone else because you choose one way and they chose another.
Telling women that they should be ashamed for choosing something that doesn’t hurt them or others (and by hurt them, I mean like choosing to do drugs or something like that), you are contributing to the patriarchy and oppression.
bolded for emphasis
reblogs because yes
sorry guys I sort of have to reblog this
breasts were made to feed children, not sexually provoke men. if an infant can and must be exposed to breasts, they can be dealt with.
Can we talk about how the person whose supposedly arguing for self-respect has the username “bo0tyclap”?
^^^^^^ my thoughts exactly
All of this.
me: It’s sad how progressive Marvel looks while standing next to DC. It’s completely amazing.
Kara: which is kind of awful too because Marvel needs help too Marvel needs help DC needs to be in an institution? is that fair?
me: Marvel is a middle class, middle America white dude who’s been pulled from his suburban all-white high school to go to college with a bunch of people who are different than him.
me: He’s that dick who goes to the women’s studies class to ‘meet chicks,’ and calls everyone bro, and doesn’t really GET why his Cinco De Mayo party is really, really kinda racist. But he talks to people who don’t look exactly like him and when he’s told that he’s being a dick he mostly listens and sure he’s still got Maxim covers up on his wall, but now he can talk to girls without trying to hit on them.
me: DC’s the guy who went to the college of people JUST LIKE HIM and entered a frat and hangs out on /bchan and takes pictures of girls who are drunk and falling out of their shirts without their knowledge and text them to everyone he knows, even the girls who are kind of like, ugh.
Kara: this is really perfect
me: So Marvel has figured out that if he wants to get a date, or more importantly, a second date, he needs to start dealing with women and other people as human beings and he’s not perfect and he’s still gonna get dumped when he mutters a vaguely homophobic epithet at the waiter at a restaurant, but he’s listening in classes and his roommate’s cool and they become friends even though they’re different races and eventually he ends up in a suite where half his roommates are women who explain that the “make me a sandwich” shirt is the reason he’s NOT GETTING LAID. And he stops wearing that shirt, except when he’s really drunk and stupid.
me: Meanwhile, DC is on facebook, telling boob jokes and then bitterly calling women bitches for not having sex with him and going back to hang out at the local high school football games despite the fact that it gets sadder every year, because everyone who used to like him has grown up and moved out and moved away and he’s still there, still talking to teenagers, except he doesn’t know the lingo and they’re not interested in what he has to say.Tags: dc comics, Marvel, Yup
Seanan McGuire went on a very long, very excellent rant on Twitter this morning, and I felt it deserved to be organized.
why i adore seanan mcguire with every ounce of my heart. i shall provide her with a cookie the next time I see her.
Reason #4,534,234,098 why I love Seanan McGuire.
I am so bored of the straight white male narrative. I only realised last week that I’ve barely read any fiction that has a straight white male protagonist recently. Bane Chronicles (non-straight, non-white, half-man half-demon). Gallagher Girls series (women. All the awesome women, and some awesome men that support and work with them). Hunger games (Straight, not white despite what the film would have you believe, female). The Miseducation of Cameron Post (non-straight characters of all genders and sexes). The Lies of Locke Lamora (Straight male, textually biracial, possibly white, up for interpretation). Untold (straight, non-white female). Huntress (non-straight, non-white female).
Gotta say, I am very happy with this state of affairs. That’s not to say I’m not a fan of the boys. Good Omens, The Hardy Boys, GENERATION KILL, Thirteen Reasons Why, Feed, Looking for Alaska. Guys are great, but their stories are not my stories. I’ve been brought up by their stories, and it takes a lot for the straight white male narrative to give me something new and interesting (example: Ocean at the End of the Lane, A+)
And now I have to go watch 14 incredible women kick the asses for 14 other incredible women. wftda.tv, oh yes, it’s time for LONDON ROLLERGIRLS vs ROSE CITY ROLLERS AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHO WILL WIN AND I DON’T LIKE IT.
